PLETHORA – a National level 2-day Workshop…
Plethora-2K18, a national level 2-day workshop on engine disassembly and assembly, was conducted by the Mechanical Engineering Department of MMEC on 25th and 26th March 2018 under the banner of MESSA (Mechanical Engg Students & Staff Association).
This annual event was successfully organized for the third time with an overwhelming response/participation from student community and the industries. The total enrolments from the students of Karnataka and the neighboring states exceeded 140 as against the 120 planned entries.

The event commenced with an inaugural function at 10.00 am, on 25-03-2018.
Dr.Suresh Mashyal, Head of Dept, welcomed the gathering, while Prof.Anand.C.Mattikalli introduced the guests of the function. Prof.Kallappa.K, Coordinator of Plethora, briefed the gathering about the objectives of Plethora.
The chief guest Mr.Preetam Birje, Sr. Engineer, Mercedes Benz, Bengaluru, who also is an alumnus of MMEC, advised the students to take the best advantage of the on-hands experience at the workshop.
The Guest of Honour, Shri. Laxmanrao B.Sainuche, Director, Maratha Mandal, highlighted about the fast developing technology where things we learn today may become obsolete very soon, and asked the students to attend such workshops, technical exhibitions etc to get in touch with the present trends.
Dr.V.R.Udupi, Principal, while giving the presidential remarks, proudly claimed that Plethora is a unique workshop for budding mechanical engineers that has been making tremendous impact on the student community since 3 years. He expressed thankfulness for the overwhelming response from student community and the industries, and called upon the students to be industry-ready by the time they graduate.

A technical talk was given by Mr.Preetam Birje, Sr. Engineer, Mercedes-Benz Bangalore. He stressed upon the importance of having practical knowledge for growth in mechanical engineering career. He shared his knowledge on the advancement of technology in the field of transmission gearbox, dual clutch technology, hybrid car, sports car and racing car technology and hinted on the development of Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles by the year 2020 owing to the European automotive market-plans to completely switchover to electric vehicles by 2025.
He briefed about the electric vehicle project “FAME Scheme” a Government of India initiative with a plan is to have electric vehicles on the road by the year 2050.
WORKSHOP PRACTICE & COMPETITIONS
A highly systematic methodology was followed for conducting the demo followed by the evaluation of performance of the participants.
Thorough instructions and demo are provided by expert and specialized technicians.
Students from various institutes were mixed randomly to form groups such that in a group, the individual students have to work with group-mates who are strangers to them. Each group would then be made to elect by their own consensus its leader.
Each group is expected to do the disassembly and assembly on 4 engines, two each from 2-stroke & 4-stroke categories. The performance shall be evaluated based on the factors like – discipline, coordination, skills in using the tools, agility and enthusiasm, answers to the queries by the jury-team, etc.
The valedictory function was scheduled at 4.30pm on 26-03-2018.
Dr.Suresh Mashyal, Head of Dept delivered the welcome speech. Prof.Ramnath Lashe, Co-Coordinator introduced the Chief Guest.
The Chief Guest Mr.Lingaraj Jagajampi, Shri Munishwer Motors, Royal Enfield, Belagavi, enlightened the students on the recent trends in automotive industry and the rising concern for environmental pollution & sustainability. He congratulated MMEC for organizing this workshop which is the need of the hour.
Dr.V.R.Udupi, Principal, in his presidential address, advised the students to imbibe practical skills and to have interdisciplinary professional capabilities to build up their career. He cited recent examples of innovations in automobiles by the sheer creative zeal of even non-technical persons. He expressed joy for the grand success of the event and congratulated the whole team of PLETHORA-2K18.
Prizes and certificates were distributed followed by a ‘Video-Trailer’ of ‘Memorable-Moments’ of Plethora-2K18.
